Top 5: Italian Lakes-Lago di Como

September 21, 2011

We’re topping the countdown with none other than Lake Como, which is Italy’s most popular lake and a top romantic destination. It is located in the northern Italian Lakes District, in Lombardy, between Milan and Switzerland and with its fairly temperate weather, it can be visited any time of year. It is the third largest lake and one of the most popular lakes in the country, and in Europe, not to forget, it is also the deepest one in Italy.

Lake Como is surrounded by beautiful villas  (see Villa Olmo or Villa Carlotta) and resort villages as well as hiking paths and it’s popular for boat trips, water activities, and photography.

Currently, many celebrities have or had homes on the shores of Lake Como, such as Matthew Bellamy, Madonna, George Clooney, Gianni Versace, Ronaldinho, Sylvester Stallone, Richard Branson, and others.

Ferries link the major villages and towns of Lake Como, providing both a good form of public transportation and a good way to do some sightseeing from the lake. There is also a bus system to villages around the lake.  File:LagoComoCarlotta.jpg

Top attractions of this lake include Bellagio, known as the pearl of the lake, town located in a beautiful setting where the three branches of Lake Como come together. It’s easy to get to by ferry or bus from other cities on the lake. Read more about it in the Bellagio Travel Guide.
