Olympic special / Spotlight on Italy

July 29, 2012

Day 1 of the Olympic Games was certainly eventful for the Italian team. They finished the day off with the total of 2 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze – not too bad, considering we have yet to see one Federica Pellegrini compete in the finals, as well as their volleyball, football and water polo teams. I will be watching out for their rowers, as you know I’m a passionate fan of rowing, and any medals or spots in the finals (and I have high hopes I’ll tell you that).

Girl power. To kick off this medals table review, we should probably start with one event that Italy has been dominating recently – fencing. In the women’s individual competition, Italy swooped all the medals thanks to these very talented ladies: Elisa di Francisca (gold), Arianna Errigo (silver) and Valentina Vezzali (bronze). I bet the other gals competing just didn’t know what hit them.

Boy power? Archers weren’t far behind, finishing first and snatching the gold in the team event in front of the Americans in a most exciting last round.

Last but not least. Luca Tesconi celebrated the silver medal just in front of Serbia’s Andrija Zlatic in Men’s 10 meter air pistol.

Quite an exiting first day for the Azzurri, and as I’m writing this, their swimmers in the men’s relay competition just made it into the finals, which will take place this evening. Go team Italy!
